How to Enjoy Your Candles Safely: Let's Keep the "Waxidents" Happy!
Here at A Happy Waxident, we believe the best kind of waxident is accidentally discovering that your Vanilla Bean and Spiced Pumpkin candles smell amazing when they melt next to each other. What we don’t love are accidents that involve safety hazards.
Candles bring instant warmth, coziness, and incredible fragrance to a room, but it’s important to remember that you are dealing with an open flame. To make sure your home stays a safe, relaxing haven, we’ve put together the ultimate candle safety guide.
Let's dive into the essential rules of happy (and safe!) burning.
✂️ 1. Always Trim Your Wick
Before you even think about reaching for that lighter, check your wick.
- The Rule: Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every single burn.
- Why it matters: A wick that is too long will cause the flame to burn too high, which can lead to sooting (that black smoke that stains your glass), mushrooming (a carbon buildup on the wick), and an uneven burn. You can use a specialized wick trimmer, nail clippers, or even just pinch off the burnt bits with your fingers once it’s completely cool.
📍 2. Location, Location, Location
Where you put your candle is just as important as how you burn it.
- Clear the area: Keep your candle at least 12 inches away from anything flammable (curtains, books, paper, dried flowers, and bedding).
- Dodge the drafts: Avoid placing your candle near open windows, air vents, or fans. Drafts cause the flame to flicker wildly, which leads to uneven burning and excess smoking.
- Protect your surfaces: Always place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface to prevent heat damage to your furniture.
⏱️ 3. The 4-Hour Rule
We know it’s tempting to let your favorite scent burn all day long, but candles need a break, too!
- The Rule: Never burn a candle for more than 3 to 4 hours at a time.
- Why it matters: Burning a candle for too long causes carbon to collect on the wick, making it unstable. It can also cause the glass container to overheat and potentially crack. After 4 hours, blow it out, let it cool completely, trim the wick, and then you can light it again.
👀 4. Never Ghost Your Candle
This is the golden rule of candle safety!
- The Rule: Never, ever leave a burning candle unattended.
- Why it matters: If you are leaving the room for an extended period or going to sleep, extinguish the flame. It only takes a second for a pet to knock a candle over or a stray breeze to blow a curtain into the flame. Keep candles out of reach of curious kids and playful pets.
🗑️ 5. Keep the Wax Pool Clean
Your wax pool is not a trash can!
- The Rule: Keep the melted wax pool clear of wick trimmings, matches, and dust.
- Why it matters: Debris in the wax can act as a secondary wick, causing the candle to burn too hot or ignite the whole surface of the wax.
🛑 6. Know When to Say Goodbye
It’s hard to part with a beloved Happy Waxident scent, but burning a candle down to the absolute bottom is a major safety hazard.
- The Rule: Stop burning your candle when there is 1/2 inch of wax left in the container.
- Why it matters: Without enough wax to absorb the heat, the bottom of the glass jar can get dangerously hot and shatter. Don't worry, though—you can always use a candle warmer to get those last few drops of fragrance out, or clean out the jar and repurpose it!
By following these simple guidelines, you can ensure that the only "waxidents" in your home are the joyful ones.
Stay cozy, stay safe, and happy burning! 🕯️✨
